言語の基礎 — 弁別特徴と二極性（隠喩・換喩）

高校生向けのやさしい解説

言葉を細かく分けていくと音素になり、音素はさらに「有声/無声」「鼻音/非鼻音」のような二択（弁別特徴）の束として記述できます。それを示した Part I に続き、Part II では失語症の研究から「言葉を選ぶ（類似性）」と「言葉をつなぐ（隣接性）」という二つの操作を取り出し、それが文学の隠喩と換喩、絵画ではキュビスムとシュルレアリスム、夢、呪術にまで貫通する『普遍的な二極性』だ、と論じます。構造主義言語学の古典中の古典。

概要

Jakobson & Halle (1956) は二部構成。Part I “Phonology and Phonetics” は、言語を「弁別特徴（distinctive features）」という二項対立の束で記述する構造主義音韻論を提示する。語は音素に、音素は同時的な弁別特徴の束に分解される。Part II “Two Aspects of Language and Two Types of Aphasic Disturbances” は Jakobson 単独執筆で、ソシュールの二項分類を継承しつつ、言語記号のあらゆる運用は (a) 選択（類似性に基づく置換）、(b) 結合（隣接性に基づく文脈生成）の二操作に還元されるとする。失語症はこの二軸のどちらが崩壊するかで類似性障害と接触性障害に分類でき、それぞれ隠喩的極（metaphoric pole）と換喩的極（metonymic pole）に対応する。この「二極性」は言語を超え、詩学、映像、絵画、夢（Freud）、呪術（Frazer）にまで及ぶ普遍的メタ構造として提案される。

音素は弁別特徴の束

“Linguistic analysis gradually breaks down complex speech units into morphemes as the ultimate constituents endowed with proper meaning and dissolves these minutest semantic vehicles into their ultimate components, capable of differentiating morphemes from each other. These components are termed distinctive features.” (p.4, §1.2)

“The listener is obliged to choose either between two polar qualities of the same category, as in the case of grave vs. acute, or between the presence and absence of a certain quality such as voiced vs. voiceless” (p.4)

最小要素は二項対立する弁別特徴。音素はそれらの同時束として定義される。

二操作 — 選択（類似性）と結合（隣接性）

“Any linguistic sign involves two modes of arrangement. 1) Combination … 2) Selection. … selection and substitution are two faces of the same operation.” (p.60)

“F. de Saussure states that the former [‘in presentia’: combination] is based on two or several terms jointly present in an actual series, whereas the latter [‘in absentia’: selection] connects terms in absentia as members of a virtual mnemonic series.” (p.61)

ソシュールの syntagmatic / associative 対の継承と再定式化。

失語症の二類型

“We distinguish two basic types of aphasia – depending on whether the major deficiency lies in selection and substitution, with relative stability of combination and contexture; or conversely, in combination and contexture, with relative retention of normal selection and substitution.” (p.63)

類似性障害（選択軸の崩壊）患者は文脈から切り離された語を理解できず、隣接性にのみ依存。接触性障害（結合軸の崩壊）患者は文を構成できず単独語に退行。臨床データが二操作モデルの経験的証拠となる。

隠喩極と換喩極

“Metaphor is alien to the similarity disorder, and metonymy to the contiguity disorder.” (p.76)

“The metaphoric way would be the most appropriate term for the first case and the metonymic way for the second” (p.76)

選択（類似性）軸 = 隠喩的極、結合（隣接性）軸 = 換喩的極。個人スタイル・文化潮流・芸術運動はこの二極のどちらを優位にするかで特徴づけられる。

二極性は言語を超えて貫通する

“The alternative predominance of one or the other of these two processes is by no means confined to verbal art. … A salient example from the history of painting is the manifestly metonymical orientation of cubism, where the object is transformed into a set of synecdoches; the surrealist painters responded with a patently metaphorical attitude. Ever since the productions of D. W. Griffith, the art of the cinema … has broken with the tradition of the theater” (p.78)

“in an inquiry into the structure of dreams, the decisive question is whether the symbols and the temporal sequences used are based on contiguity (Freud’s metonymic ‘displacement’ and synecdochic ‘condensation’) or on similarity (Freud’s ‘identification and symbolism’). The principles underlying magic rites have been resolved by Frazer into two types: charms based on the law of similarity and those founded on association by contiguity.” (p.81)

キュビスム（換喩）/ シュルレアリスム（隠喩）、グリフィス以降の映画の close-up（換喩）/ montage（隠喩的）、フロイトの夢理論、フレイザーの呪術類型と同型。「あらゆる記号過程に貫通する原初的意義」を持つ。

方法

比較音韻論と構造言語学（Prague 学派の音素論、Saussure の syntagmatic/associative 対、Peirce の記号論、Carnap の object/metalanguage 区分）の統合。失語症の臨床データ（Head, Goldstein, Luria, Freud）を二軸モデルで再解釈。

プロジェクトデザインとの関連

「すべての言語的・文化的・心理的現象が二つの軸（類似性 / 隣接性）の合成として記述できる」という構造主義的洞察は、project-design における「分類の軸を二項対立の束で表現する」という方法論と並走する。とくに「個人や文化のスタイルはこの二極のどちらが優位かで特徴づけられる」という観点は、PD 論におけるプロジェクトの個別性と類型性の同時記述に転用しうる枠組みを提供する。
